Amashova to boost KZN economy

An economic impact study conducted by Tourism KZN following the 2018 Amashova Classic event found that of the total number of entrants who participated in the race, 57 per cent were visitors to KwaZulu-Natal.

WHILE disposable income is tight for most in this downturn economy, every time a tourist arrives in South Africa or locals visit their favourite holiday destination, they are making a significant contribution to the country’s economic growth.

Sporting events are an important part of this tourist recipe for success, and races such as the Tsogo Sun Amashova Durban Classic continue to put the pedal to the metal by attracting visitors to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).

An economic impact study conducted by Tourism KZN, following the 2018 Amashova Classic event, found that of the total number of entrants who participated in the race, 57 per cent were visitors to KZN.

Their total average spend for the event duration was up to R4 460 from R3 411 and most people stayed two nights or more.

The total average spend for the 2018 race was estimated to be between R45-million and R110-million.

Tsogo Sun Amashova Race director, Annie Batchelder said, “Having more visitors attend the race is incredibly positive for us because visitors spend more, and this injects new money into our economy.”

This is the second year that the Tsogo Sun Amashova race has not only focused its efforts on attracting visitors from other parts of the country – but outside of SA too.

This year, the Tsogo Sun Amashova will again form part of the international Gran Fondo World Tour as the tenth and final event of the prestigious series which sees cyclists from all over the world participating in cycling events hosted in various countries.

Furthermore, the Tsogo Sun Amashova is still the only African hosted race that forms part of the Gran Fondo World Tour. With a substantial prize offering of $25 000 up for grabs, Batchelder and her team are expecting more international and local elite riders to compete this year.

“We are delighted that the Gran Fondo World Tour has requested that we be part of their series of races again with the final leg being in Africa. What a great opportunity to showcase our beautiful city, province and country to the world,” Batchelder enthused.
