Chubb ‘gang initiation’ message is a hoax

The hoax message has been widely shared on WhatsApp and other social media platforms.

CHUBB Security South Africa said it is urging residents not to share a hoax message circulating on WhatsApp. According to the message, prospective new gang members of the ‘Bloods’ are being initiated by killing the drivers of cars who flash their headlights at them.

However, Lynn Bennett, communications manager for the company said the message comes from an urban legend which started more than 10 years ago in America.

“Chubb SA did not endorse this statement. This letter first surfaced locally in 2008. This was never an official communiqué, and is definitely not the views of Chubb SA.  Unfortunately with most emails and messages on social network platforms, they lay dormant for a period of time, then surface and start doing their rounds again.  As is the case with this one. Should you receive it from any other source inform them that they are to discard the message,” she said.
