Water polo player makes waves

PARKTOWN – SA youth player, Tristan Fin shares just how his love for water polo began.

With dedication and a strong will to succeed anything is possible. Budding water polo star, Tristan Fin proves this is true.

Fin left for Podgorica, Montenegro on 23 August as one of four players in Gauteng to represent South Africa at the World Youth Water Polo Championships.

He shared the great news with his with his peers at Parktown Boys’ High School during assembly.

His love for water polo started when he was a young boy intrigued by the action-packed water sport.

“I started water polo when I started high school because not many primary schools offer it,” said Fin.

He recalled how he would hear his father speak about the days he played water polo and from those nostalgic stories, knew that it was something he wanted to do as soon as he could.

Now, Fin has his second Protea blazer. His first was for his exceptional work in Karate.

Fin explained that he loves sport because he gets to meet people through doing what he loves.

“It’s great to meet people who are motivated and want the best for themselves, also the coaches are always ready to motivate and push you towards doing your best.”

To prepare for the championships, Fin has had to train daily. “Training is hard, but it is all totally worth it.”

Fin’s coach, Ettienne le Roux, has trained him since he joined the school team back when he was 15. “[Fin] was a tiny player when he started and now he has managed to grow into an exceptional player,” said Le Roux.

He added that Fin has become a dominant force in the school when it comes to water polo. “He surprised everyone when he played in the U19 ‘cold’ side in the SA schools tournament last year and won attack of the tournament, which gave him the confidence to push harder and I am very proud of him.”
