Pupils mind their own business

NORTHCLIFF – Northcliff Primary School Grade 7 pupils run their businesses and have fun while doing so.

Northcliff Primary School pupils show us how making money can be fun.

Recently, as part of their economic management sciences curriculum, the Grade 7s developed a business plan and put it into action by means of a Fun Day. The important lessons learned through this day were planning, working as a team, delegation, responsibility, negotiation, keeping accounts and the concept of profit and loss.

Principal of the school, Jeanine Kerr said the businesses were set up by the pupils and their fellow peers were able to buy from any of the businesses. “Tasty foods and sweet treats were available and they could also indulge in activities such as a disco and even visiting a haunted house.”

Kerr added that aside from the learning experience, a sense of corporate social responsibility was developed. “The profits made are all donated to the school in the form of a Grade 7 gift as a show of gratitude for the excellent education received at Northcliff Primary.” The Grade 7s will now have a meeting to decide what they will be buying the school. In previous years, gifts such as a memorial garden and fans for the hall were purchased by the Grade 7 class.

Kerr also said that they acknowledge the backing and support of the parents, most of whom found themselves acting as a bank for these micro-businesses. “We would also like to thank businesses in the community who donated goods for this venture.”

She concluded by thanking all the sponsors, Meat World, Spur at Heathway and Cresta, Pick n Pay at Cresta, Northcliff Corner, Jumbo Framers, DStv Multichoice, Oasis, Rocco Mama’s at Cresta Crossing and Lucio’s Pizzeria who helped make the day a success.
