Scammers pretend to be police officers

BRIXTON – Residents are warned by Brixton police not to give any money to people claiming to be police officers.

Community members are requested to be aware of people who claim to be police officers to scam them of money.
This comes after Brixton Police Station received a spate of complaints from victims who said they had received a call from someone who claimed to be a police officer and requested that they transfer money to an unknown account.
Spokesperson for Brixton police, Jeanette Backhoff said that members of the public whose vehicles had been stolen and had reported it to the station, would then receive calls from this unknown person. “This person, under the [guise] of being an officer, would then inform the victim that his/her vehicle has been recovered in a different province.”
She added that they would then state that they would bring back the vehicle if the victim transferred money into an account. “The victims would then pay large amounts of money into the account without getting their car back.”
Backhoff concluded that members of the public must, under no circumstances, pay any money into bank accounts if they receive similar calls. “If they are not sure what to do in this kind of situation, they must go to their nearest police station and request assistance.”
