Grade 2 children were excited when they had an interactive and educational visit by local police.
On the day, the De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School’s little ones sat patiently waiting for the Linden police and, upon their arrival the festivities began.
Constable Takalani Matumba introduced herself and her team and jumped straight into teaching them what the police really do. She explained to the children that her job is to protect and teach children.
They also interacted with the youngsters asking them questions such as what number to call in emergencies and what detectives do, to which the smart children answered perfectly.
They were also taught how to greet and salute high-ranking officers in the police force.
The highlight of the day came when the children were given the chance to get into the back of the police vans which Matumba and her fellow officers had arrived in.
The grade 2’s eagerly stood in line waiting for their turn and when given permission, they would storm the van.
The other youngsters who had had their turn continued to engage with the police, asking them questions about their first arrests and the most frightening criminals.
Matumba said these school visits are important because they build relationships between children and the police.
“We want them to believe they can call us for any emergency and that we are here to help them.” She added that these visits go a long way in making crime look unattractive at a young age.
She urged other schools to contact them if they are interested in having visits.
