“Africanara is our African edition of an Italian based storytelling week,” explained the schools acting principal, Jade-Lia Laurent. She described the event as one that has everything to do with stories – told in various ways. Be it through performances, songs, even shadow theatre, making sure to incorporate the many ways of telling stories all while families have lots of fun together.
One of the many facets of the day Laurent enjoyed was the level of parent involvement, with some even performing for the children. The celebrations ran over a weekend with each day focusing on something different. The last day saw a few families head to Lindfield House, a Victorian museum in Auckland Park where they learned about the history of their community.

In Laurent’s opinion, storytelling is deeply rooted in culture, history, expression and imagination. “It connects us to each other and storytelling can be a language of its own. It is so important in literacy in that it teaches children new words and new ways of expressing themselves.”
What she loved about the day was how everyone came out and really enjoyed their time together, dressed in their accents of yellow.
