Community clean-up restores pride in public spaces
The Cleaning and Beautification of South Africa team beautified the streets of Sophiatown in the hopes of creating a greener and cleaner environment.
The Cleaning and Beautification of South Africa team took to the streets of Sophiatown with the aim of enhancing the appearance of public streets on August 16.
Edmund Zungu, who is part of the Cleaning and Beautification steering committee, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the community for their enthusiastic support of the initiative.
The clean-up focused on several key areas, including clearing the pavement and bicycle lane, as well as removing illegally dumped rubble near the wall of the JMPD. Additionally, rubble left by the Johannesburg Roads Agency after road repairs was also tended to, contributing to a cleaner environment.
Zungu added that a significant highlight of the event was the participation of members from the City of Johannesburg’s bomb squad. He said that their presence brought a sense of hope and social cohesion to the community. “It was like a ray of light in a dark sky,” he said, emphasising the positive interactions among all parties involved during the clean-up.

Local businesses also played a vital role in supporting the initiative, with Roodt Butchery providing meat for lunch, ensuring that all volunteers were fed, while South Bakels and Build It Hardware have consistently shown their support, which Zungu and the committee greatly appreciated.
He said the importance of maintaining clean streets and public spaces was underscored during the clean-up, saying that a clean environment fostered viable ecosystems and boosted the local economy. “The clean-up initiative is part of a broader objective to promote cleanliness across the country.”

Zungu acknowledged that while it may not be possible to achieve this goal overnight, ongoing efforts would inspire other communities to take similar actions. He reflected on the progress made since the launch of the initiative in October 2024, noting significant improvements in local parks.
