92nd-minute magic keeps UJ’s top-four dreams alive

In a nail-biting finish, Sekhwela’s last-minute goal turned despair into joy for UJ, keeping their top-four dreams alive.

Keletso Sekhwela’s last-minute goal propelled the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Senior Men’s Football Team to a crucial 1-0 away victory against the University of Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein on August 14.

The win keeps UJ’s hopes of a top-four finish alive as they celebrated Sekhwela’s strike in the 92nd minute at Shimla Park.

The match began cautiously, with both teams struggling to find their rhythm and create scoring opportunities in the first half. As the halftime whistle blew, a stalemate seemed inevitable, with neither side able to break the deadlock.

However, UJ emerged from the break with renewed determination, launching a series of attacks that tested the UFS defence. The home side’s goalkeeper made an impressive save, while Sekhwela nearly scored earlier with a spectacular overhead scissor kick.

As the match progressed, coaches Mokete Tsotetsi and Karabo Mogudi made substitutions to invigorate their teams. It was UJ who ultimately found the breakthrough. In the second minute of four minutes of added time, Sekhwela capitalised on a corner kick, netting the only goal of the game and igniting celebrations among the visiting team.

UJ’s strong second-half performance was further recognised with individual accolades, as Sinenhlanhla Mkhonza was named the FNB Player of the Match for the second consecutive round, while Sekhwela earned the SportPesa Goal Rush Award. Young goalkeeper Kyle van Rensburg made a memorable debut, keeping a clean sheet in place of the injured Lungelo Sithole.

UJ now sits in third place on the log with four points.
