Construction on the Fairland gabions project, valued at R15m, is showing renewed progress after a period of disruption that brought work to a halt late last year.

The project was originally scheduled to run for five months and to be completed before the peak rainy season in 2025. However, construction stalled in late September, raising concerns about timelines and delivery.

In the new year, activity at the Fairland Estate has improved significantly, marking a turning point for the long-delayed development.

Johannesburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) head of infrastructure development Kwazelela Mcetywa confirmed that construction is continuing on the Fairland gabions project.
According to the latest update, the works are currently at 70% completion of the project scope.

“Four small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs), together with labourers, have been appointed as part of the project and are actively on site, contributing to ongoing construction efforts.”

Mcetywa added that despite earlier setbacks, the completion date remains unchanged. “The project is still scheduled to be finalised in March 2026, in line with the timeline previously communicated by JRA.”

At the Fairland Estate bridge, gabions on one side of the bridge are fully complete, while work continues steadily on the other side. On February 2, SMMEs are on site pushing ahead with the remaining work.
