Local sailing club builds community on the water

The Emmarentia Sailing club is inviting community members to enjoy the joy of the sail with them.

Tucked beneath the trees and open skies of Emmarentia Dam lies one of Johannesburg’s best-kept secrets – a place where wind, water, and community come together.

Established in 1956, the Emmarentia Sailing Club, has quietly built a legacy on the historic dam constructed in the early 1900s. Today, it offers a rare escape from the pace of city life, just minutes from the urban core.

On any given Sunday, sails cut across the water, laughter drifts from the clubhouse, and beginners find their confidence alongside seasoned sailors. More than just a sailing club, it has become a space where people connect across ages, backgrounds, and skill levels.

“It’s a hidden gem in the city,” said the club’s Andrew Arthur. “You can arrive as a complete beginner and, within a short time, be out on the water experiencing something truly unique.”

The club offers access to a variety of water activities, from dinghy sailing and canoeing to paddle boarding and open water swimming. For those new to sailing, instructors and club boats make it easy to get started, removing much of the intimidation that often surrounds the sport. Beyond the water, it is the sense of community that keeps members coming back. Families gather on the lawns, young sailors learn independence and confidence, and volunteers work together to keep the club running.

The sport itself is said to offer more than recreation. It demands focus, builds resilience, and rewards patience, as sailors learn to harness the wind and navigate changing conditions.

Anchored in community spirit, the club aims to continue to invite residents to discover something different – an adventure perhaps, awaiting them just beyond the dam shoreline.
