Springbok Morne van den Berg inspires Hoërskool Linden learners during emotional homecoming visit

Returning to the school where his rugby journey began, Springbok Morne van den Berg encouraged young athletes to dream big, work hard and believe that anything is possible.

Returning to the school where his rugby journey first took shape, Springbok scrumhalf Morne van den Berg reminded learners at Hoërskool Linden that success begins with believing in a dream and putting in the work to achieve it.

Van den Berg said it was special to walk through the school gates again and relive memories from the place that played such an important role in shaping both his rugby career and his character. “It is so cool to be back here. To experience the atmosphere again, seeing everyone and walking into the hall brings back so many memories,” he said.

Addressing aspiring rugby players, Van den Berg emphasised the importance of grassroots development and encouraged learners to believe that their own ambitions are within reach.

He said representing South Africa comes with a responsibility to inspire the next generation and hoped learners would leave knowing that where they come from should never limit what they can achieve. “I want them to know that dreaming is possible. No matter where you’re from, if you work hard enough, anything is possible.”

Reflecting on his own school days, Van den Berg said some of his most treasured memories were created on the rugby field, where lifelong friendships were formed.

However, he said it was often the difficult moments that shaped him the most. Looking back, he described himself as an awkward teenager who found confidence through rugby, adding that the sport gave him a place where he could truly be himself.

Van den Berg said those experiences taught him resilience and helped mould the person and player he is today, lessons he hopes will encourage young athletes as they pursue their own sporting dreams.
