Friends of Linden Library preserve more than books at Linden Library
Friends of Linden Library is about more than raising money; it's about protecting a place where children discover stories, students find opportunities, and neighbours invest in the future of their community.
The way volunteers for Friends of Linden Library (FOLL) see it, when it comes to supporting the Linden Library, it’s about far more than keeping books on shelves.
It’s a show of preserving a community space, where people of every generation can learn, connect, and discover the joy of reading. The volunteer organisation was re-established in February 2025, after senior librarian Senzo Nkwanyana recognised the need to rebuild community support following the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Although FOLL had existed previously, the group had dissolved over time, leaving an opportunity for a new generation of volunteers to continue its work.
Chairperson Maureen Freeman was among those who answered the call. “I’ve always loved this library. When the opportunity came to help, it felt like the right thing to do.”
Since then, a small but dedicated group has devoted countless hours to raising funds through community book sales, purchasing new books, supporting children’s programmes, and even carrying out practical improvements around the library. One recent project saw volunteers sand and revarnish the librarians’ counter tops, helping create a more welcoming space for both staff and visitors.
Freeman said fundraising remains the group’s primary focus, with proceeds helping to buy protective plastic covers that significantly extend the lifespan of library books. “A covered book lasts much longer on the shelf, which means more people can enjoy it over time.”
Beyond maintaining the library, the volunteers share a common belief that public libraries continue to play an essential role in modern society. Freeman thinks that a thriving community library is vital, adding that it offers books, free Wi-Fi, computer access, children’s activities, and opportunities for lifelong learning. Libraries have so much to offer.
She is particularly passionate about encouraging children to read, describing the sight of toddlers paging through picture books as one of the library’s greatest rewards. “It is so important to develop literacy from a young age. Reading gives everyone the opportunity to slow down, relax, and enjoy time away from screens.”
While FOLL has been encouraged by the support it has received from residents, Freeman believes there is still room for more people to become involved. Donating of books, supporting fundraising events, becoming library members, or simply spreading the word all help strengthen the library’s future. She also hopes local businesses will recognise the value of investing in one of Linden’s longest-standing community institutions.

As for looking towards the future, Freeman hopes the organisation will continue to grow, while inspiring younger generations to become involved. “We want young people to keep reading, share their ideas, and help shape what the library becomes in the future.” If every Linden resident walked through the library’s doors today, Freeman believes they would discover something many may have forgotten.
When asked to describe FOLL in just three words, Freeman chose ‘enthusiastic, goal-driven, and dedicated’ – qualities that reflect a group of volunteers quietly ensuring that one of Linden’s most treasured community spaces continues writing its next chapter.
