In the world of sports, when discipline meets self defence it is called Seido karate.
Seido karate is a traditional style of Japanese karate that not only teaches people how to defend themselves, but also instils discipline.
Junshihen (new master) George Wong, a Seido karate instructor, says this form of karate also symbolises the way of 'emptiness'. “Seido karate translates into the way of the empty hand. That means we learn how to fight with empty hands. We teach martial arts but we also teach the philosophy behind it,” said Wong.
It is a sport that encourages giving and living life. The Seido Karate School in Melville, run by Wong and established in 2005, is a Johannesburg branch of the World Seido Karate Association which represents 26 countries. According to Wong, they also provide programmes for the blind and abused.
