Sergeant Jakobus Phillipus Landman (35) from the South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently fighting for his life in hospital in Bloemfontein after his leg became infected.
He suffers from Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). SLE, also known simply as lupus, is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in many parts of the body.
His wife, Ilze Landman, says, “He continued to go out of his way to help the community and serve as a policeman.”

He was in ICU for four days in Ladysmith, where he started vomiting blood.
After spending two weeks in hospital in Ladysmith, his wife saw no improvement in her husband’s condition and chose to take him to a hospital in Bloemfontein (where he was diagnosed with SLE in 2003).
He has had three operations and a cold press to try and stop the bleeding.
Ilze says, “He is very weak and in a bad condition. He is so weak that he can’t even talk on the phone.”
