Sunday, January 24, marked a special occasion for Tamil devotees who participated in Thaipoosam Kavady.

Gathering at the at the end of Asnika Crescent near the Suryaville Temple, devotees prayed for peace, love and health in the community at the Ncandu River, before taking up kavadies and carrying them through the streets.

Kavadies represent burdens of sin and suffering, and are heavy religious objects, decorated with flowers and peacock feathers.

Certain devotees also pierced pins through certain areas of their bodies as part of the festivities, signifying a spiritual experience for the devotees as it marked the end of their fasting period.
