Contenders rise at karate competition

More than 170 entries were received, from affiliated clubs in Dundee, Hluhluwe, Ladysmith, Newcastle, Paulpietersburg, Piet Retief, Pongola, Volksrust and Vryheid.

The Northern KwaZulu-Natal JKA Championships concluded in Newcastle on Saturday.

More than 170 entries were received, from affiliated clubs in Dundee, Hluhluwe, Ladysmith, Newcastle, Paulpietersburg, Piet Retief, Pongola, Volksrust and Vryheid.

The highlight of the day were the elite open divisions, organisers said.

Jennifer Whitfield was crowned the champion of the female open kumite division, and would later take the kata division as well, while Mthunzi Mbatha was the men’s open elite kumite division.

“Medal winners have all been selected to represent NKZN in their respective categories, at the Provincial JKA Championships in Pinetown on April 30,” said Sensei, Johan Swart.

From this competition, a team will be selected to represent the province at the South African Championships on May 20 and 21 in Johannesburg.
