Artists canvass Bhekuzulu for talented creative hands
Although some would say art is just a hobby, there are some who are talented enough to make a career through art.
Local artist, Freedom Nene (24) and his partner, Mvelo Ngema are bringing change through the various art forms.
These two young men recently opened an art gallery in the Ebhekuzulu (KwaMandlokovu) old location, called Still My Art, and are using their skills to teach others how to create art of their own.
Lessons include fine art, graphic design and live performance.
Freedom and Mvelo’s work is centred on unemployed youth with a passion or interest in art.
They said the aim of this initiative is was to decrease substance abuse within the Bhekuzulu community, and to give back.
“We can’t just sit back and do nothing, while our brothers and sisters waste their talents and skills on nothing,” said Freedom.
Both he and Mvelo believe everyone is born with a special talent of some sort, and they hoped to change people’s perception of art.
They also go from school to school to find learners with talent in the art forms.
Although some would say art is just a hobby, there are some who are talented enough to make a career and earn a living through.
To Freedom and Mvelo, art is where they express their feelings, thoughts and views on life.
At the gallery, chess games are also hosted to ‘exercise the mind of the people’, and the artists’ team still has a lot of plan for expanding the project – including aerobics classes.
This new organisation believes with assistance, it can achieve many goals.
Anyone who can lend a hand, through funding of materials or cash, is urged to call the team on 076 081 2620.
