Mission ‘ Food-a-thon’ accomplished

The recipients were incredibly grateful for the meal, with one person saying: "No cooking for us today!"

More than 70,000 vegetarian lunches were distributed to South Africans on Saturday. This mammoth initiative, dubbed the Covid-19 Food-A-Thon, was undertaken by Food for Life South Africa.

Nationally, 71,280 meals were prepared and distributed, with branches from Cape Town to Port Shepstone being part of the food drive.

The Food for Life Estcourt team was part of the food-a-thon, and volunteers were awake early to commence cooking and packaging 200 meals between 6am and 9am.

Breyani and dhall were on the menu, and the members lovingly prepared the meal before it was packed and ready for distribution.

Sister Beata Msomi from Ithembalethu Outreach Project gratefully picked up the meals and drove to C-Section in Wembezi, where the food was distributed to patients who are cared for by the organisation.

There were many gestures of appreciation, from singing to choruses of “thank you”.

The residents requested that Sister Beata pass on their appreciation to the Food for Life Estcourt branch for the nutritious lunch.

Meanwhile, in Estcourt, the Food for Life members packed up their meals in a vehicle (generously sponsored by Brokenshas) and headed off to Forderville.

There, dozens of families received a freshly-prepared home-cooked meal. The vision of the Food for Life Estcourt branch is to continue providing meals to deserving families each month, in the hope of increasing the number of meals.

You can help them reach this goal by sponsoring a ‘feed’. Just call Lokeshwar Das on 072-765-5733.
