A place to call home

Both women were ecstatic at the prospect of owning a brand-new home

Two residents from Wembezi had a memorable Christmas after they officially took ownership of their new homes, thanks to the Gift of the Givers Foundation.

Their previous homes were damaged following severe storms in March last year. Duduzile Shezi (70) used to live alone in a mud house, one side of which was damaged in a heavy storm. She used plastic sheeting to cover the damaged side and had it propped up with logs so that it stayed in place.

Nonkululeko Meyiwa, a mother of five, also lost her mud house due to a storm. Her sister lives with her and they were all left homeless after the storm.

They managed to construct a tin house using old materials and have been living in poor conditions since then. On December 22, both received a two-bedroom house each.

“The houses include an open plan kitchen and lounge area, painting, tiling and all the necessary electrical connections. Both the recipients were overjoyed and speechless. They had no words to express their gratitude to the foundation for giving them a new lease on life and for restoring their dignity,” said Gift of the Givers Estcourt community liaison Jaaved Khan.

Sister Maureen Aron and Sister Beata Msomi from the Ithembalethu Outreach Project sent prayers and appreciation to the foundation for this great gift to these families, especially at Christmas time.
