Vryheid displays grit in entertaining win against Bears

The committee would like to thank the community for their support and the players for their dedication to the club.

Vryheid Rugby Club hosted the Bears on May 31 at the Cecil Emmett sports ground. The game was characterised by lots of loose balls and lots of running rugby. The Bears didn’t have much resistance to the Vryheid attack, in either open play or set pieces. The only tries scored by the Bears were via intercepted 50/50 passes from the Vryheid backline. The coach would like to give special praise to Oom Leon ‘Spinnekop’ Janse van Rensburg, as the 50-year-old made himself available to play when the regular loose head prop could not. It showed that the ‘old boys’ can still put in an 80-minute game like the youngsters. ‘Man of the Match’ awards went to JD Jonker for the forwards (despite his yellow card) and Wandile Tshabalala for the backline. Wandile managed to dance around the Bears team to score five entertaining tries. The final score was 56-14 to Vryheid.
With regular season games at an end, Vryheid Rugby Club finished third on the overall log and now they await confirmation to see if they qualify for the Murray Cup. The season was challenging and Vryheid didn’t always field their best side, thus the season’s mixed results, but the future is bright with predominantly under 21s currently playing. The growth potential is enormous!

Look out on the club’s Facebook page, as Vryheid Rugby Club would like to organise an Old Boys vs Vryheid 1st XV game to end off the year. This was inspired by Oom Spinnekop’s epic 80-minute game.
