Young Vryheid team suffers massive defeat against Sentraal

Without the experience of the senior players, the youngsters crumbled under pressure

Vryheid Rugby Club travelled to Dundee to take on Sentraal on Saturday.
The NKZN League was originally meant to start in May, but due to external factors, the league was pushed forward. This left all the clubs in a difficult position, as the preparation time they are normally afforded disappeared overnight.
This was especially true for Vryheid, who, after the 2024 season, had a lot of senior players hang up their boots; this left a vacuum in the squad, so to speak. The team now mainly consists of U/20 players – a dream position for most.
However, without the experience of the senior players, the youngsters crumbled under pressure from the more experienced Sentraal team. The game started off well, with the youngsters holding their own against Sentraal for most of the first half. But then injuries to some players, who are only playing their second season of club rugby, left the juniors without leadership. Sentraal quickly took full control of the game, running in unanswered try after unanswered try.
Coach Richard Pace noted that, “There were many individuals who played amazing rugby, but rugby is a team sport and the lack of senior leadership left the team without direction in attack and defence. There were ample opportunities for Vryheid to score and keep the game in hand, but they just failed to execute and were also extremely soft in defence, gifting Sentraal runaway tries.”
The final score was 17-71 in Sentraal’s favour.
