Vryheid parkrun celebrates global milestone and local winners
Vryheid parkrun celebrates winners, welcomes newcomers and marks one million volunteers worldwide.
The Vryheid parkrun community had plenty to celebrate over the weekend, with familiar faces leading the field and a global milestone for volunteers being marked.
Local favourite Nhlanhla Ncube crossed the line first, securing his 98th first-place finish, while Cjaane Hartslief was the first female finisher, claiming her sixth event win. “Congratulations, Nhlanhla – you truly are a local hero,” the organisers noted, recognising his consistency and inspiration to others.
The morning also saw three newcomers – Mbalie, Fanyana and Jeanette – taking part in their first event. Six participants recorded new personal best times, namely Freddie, Heidi, Suzette, Freddie Snr, Vicky and Jean.
But beyond the times and finish lines, Saturday was significant for another reason as well. Globally, parkrun welcomed its one-millionth volunteer; a milestone that underlines how vital community support is to the success of this weekly event. From course set-up and timekeeping to marshalling and cheering, the volunteers make the parkrun experience possible. In Vryheid, a dedicated team continues to give of their time, week after week.
A special word of thanks goes out to Amanda, Anet, Colin, Corrie, Daan, Elisma, Frikkie, Lorna, Mike, Neels, Ronel, Ruth, Sally and Smuts for keeping the event running smoothly.
“Volunteering isn’t just about the roles – it’s about the smiles, the friendships and building a welcoming community,” the organisers said.
