New faces and milestones at ‘smaller’ parkrun
Vryheid parkrun sees new winners, milestones, and personal bests despite smaller turnout.
Fewer participants than usual at Saturday’s parkrun did not stop the excitement, as new names and long-standing milestones took centre stage.
Kwanele Mhlongo crossed the finish line first, marking an impressive performance and showing strong potential for future events. “May this be the first of many more to come,” the organisers said.
Thembi Ngcobo led the ladies, completing the course in her usual swift style. She remains a consistent top performer and was congratulated for her determination.
Despite the cold and breezy conditions, a couple of runners achieved personal best times, with Anthony and Alta celebrating improved results. The event also welcomed first-timers Zanokuhle and Nothile, a mother-and-daughter team embarking on their parkrun journey.
A special milestone was celebrated as Ria Steffensen completed her 50th parkrun, joined by her friend, Debbie Hopewell. The organisers praised Ria for her dedication and commitment to the local parkrun community.
Parkrun officials said the smaller turnout allowed for a focus on personal achievements and community spirit, highlighting the inclusive and supportive nature of this weekly event.
