Man killed in shack fire.

The incinerated remains of a 29-year-old man were discovered in a shack that burned down at the Vryheid taxi rank early Thursday morning.

The incinerated remains of a 29-year-old man were discovered in a shack that burned down at the Vryheid taxi rank early Thursday morning.
Witnesses said they overheard a loud argument in the shack just before 3am and, the next thing they knew, the shack was on fire. Rank security guards assisted four other people exit the shack but were unaware that there was a fifth person, Sbongakonke Mavundla, still trapped inside.
Pro5 rapid response officer, Corné Koster, said the fire burned out very quickly. “The fire was over within half an hour,” said Mr Koster. “We suspect that there is more to this story because the head of the man who burned inside looked as if it had been cracked open and there was a drum lying on its side, where a fire had been burning.”
Shaun Badenhorst, the centre manager at the taxi rank, expressed grave disappointment over the fact that police only arrived at the scene after 8am.
Mr Badenhorst said he had written to the SAPS asking that the shacks at the taxi rank be removed and the people relocated some time ago, but had received no response. He has always feared that the fires burned by the shack dwellers to keep warm, posed a hazard to the buildings and vehicles at the rank.
