So, is Vryheid having the Mayfair this year?

The Lions Club's Cindy Mossop answers some of those burning questions regarding the annual event.

Concern has risen throughout Vryheid with just a few weeks left and still no sign of promotional material around the town’s biggest annual event.
The Mayfair is a well anticipated event where Vryheiders have forged some of their best memories for well over 20 years, but things looked gloomy for organisers this year, due to the renovations that are currently underway its usual venue, Cecil Emmett.
Despite the fact that the Miss Mayfair pageant has already had to be shelved, the Lions Club’s Cindy Mossop says that there is no way they are cancelling the fair.
“We couldn’t possibly cancel the fair. Think of all the local charities and members of the community we are able to help with the money raised from the fair every year. It is the main means by which our organisation makes money that can be ploughed back into the community,” explained Cindy.

Vryheid Lions Club’s Cindy Mossop says Vryheiders need not worry.

Local beauty queens, who had their eyes on snatching that ‘Miss Mayfair’ title this year, are disappointed that the annual event could not be held due to the state of the hall. However, the Lions
Club promised to host another glamorous pageant as a means to make up for the fact that they won’t be hosting the Miss Mayfair this year.
“We have had so many enquiries about the pageant. People from as far out as Newcastle have been calling me, asking for entry forms. It’s been so sad having to turn them down. We are, however,
planning to have another pageant around June/July this year with the same elegance and style,” Cindy
confirmed.

On the fast approaching fair, Cindy said that the club is still hopeful about seeing more people showing their support by taking up stalls.

“We have had slight issues with the bookings as we were uncertain about whether or not the hall
would be ready by the time the fair came around, and this became very hard to explain to people who were contacting us to book stalls. The matter has, however, been sorted out and we are still encouraging locals to come forward and book their stalls,” said Cindy.

Community members may be happy to learn that safety will be of top priority at the event as the Lions Club has had several meetings with AbaQulusi’s Public Safety team as well as the Vryheid SAPS to ensure that all those present will be absolutely safe.
“We have had these meetings a few times now in order to ensure that everyone is on par as to what measures will be taken in order to ensure members of the public feel safe,” she said.

Parking will be at the same place as last year and the Lions Club is currently looking into ensuring that the area will be clean by the time the fair comes around. Although they seem to be at the top of their planning, Cindy said that it has not been smooth sailing at all as the hall renovations really created a setback.
The club has decided to clamp down on the food stalls this year, but Cindy promised that this was only to ensure that there was no duplicating of certain foods, and that fun-fair food lovers would still be tantalising their taste-buds with their favourites.
On what the children can look forward to this year, Cindy said that there would be a fun inflatable house with a foam machine that was definitely going to keep the young ones entertained for hours.
“With major events like Oppikoppi festival being cancelled, we just thought about Vryheid and how the Mayfair is one of, if not the single biggest annual event the town has. We can’t take that away from Vryheid people. It also does a lot to change the lives of the people in this town, so no, we can’t
just cancel.”
