Local cops head to national championships

Local police officers will be taking part in the national Combat Rifle Championships in Bloemfontein

Sergeant Marc Potas of the Ladysmith K9 Unit, Detective Constable Dave Warmenhoven from Ladysmith and Detective Constable Dawie Delport from Bergville will be heading to Bloemfontein to compete in the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and South African Combat Rifle Association (SACRA) Championships.
The championships will take place from September 21 to 28 at the General De Wet Shooting Range in Bloemfontein, where about 450 competitors will take aim and do their best to hit bull’s eye. Trophies will be awarded to the top performers and the top 100 officers will receive medals for taking part.
The trials for this competition were held on August 24 at the local shooting range, where male and female army, police, Correctional Services and Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) personnel took part.
Sergeant Marc Potas has had an interest in combat sports from a young age and with family in the police force, he didn’t see himself as doing anything else. He is part of the Ladysmith K-9 Unit, working with his Labrador Retriever ‘Inno’ who is trained in explosive detection.
Detective Constable Dave Warmenhoven joined the police service after his wife joined. After studying, he went straight into detective work, investigating serious and violent crime.
Detective Constable Dawie Delport always wanted to be a detective and also went into the detective department after studying. He has been doing responsible hunting from a young age, receiving his Natal Colours in 2010 and Police Colours in 2011 for target shooting.
These three officers would like to thank those people who have supported them in their work and preparing for the competition.
