Woman charged with concealment of birth

A woman was charged after she was caught trying to dispose of a foetus.

A woman has been arrested for the alleged abortion of her unborn child at Lister Farm, Madadeni.

Police were notified and found a woman who was disposing of a foetus.

Warrant Officer Simon Luthuli, SAPS spokesperson, said incidents such as this were not all that common in Newcastle, and should be taken seriously.

Women caught discarding their foetus will be charged with concealment of birth and charged in court.”

W/O Luthuli said women or young girls who fell pregnant and did not wish to have the baby, should seek help from relevant authorities.

Women and girls should not try and have an abortion by these foreign healers or try to abort the baby themselves as it can prove to be dangerous,” said W/O Luthuli.

With hospitals providing safe and authorised abortions, unnecessary pain and legal repercussions could be avoided.

There are also places such as the Newcastle Crisis Centre that can help young women who find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy and provide counselling. Women do not have to feel alone and have illegal abortions.”
