Treverton’s G.A.P. YEAR (Post Matrics) students had a very busy week with a number of varied activities; many which were dictated by the weather.

Part of their course is to assist with the planning and the instruction of the Outdoor Pursuits course, which is part of the Grade eight to ten curriculums.

This gives them invaluable experience in dealing and organising a variety of activities for younger people.

It was put to the test as well giving them experience in dealing with very young children, when they entertained a group of Grade three visitors from Durban.

They taught them the techniques of the climbing wall, which was unanimously a hit. Bad weather prevented them from kayaking and they improvised with a morning of indoor games in the Post Matric Centre.

Their final test came when three of the students looked after the young children for a sleepover.

Also on their agenda, was preparing the final Grade eight Outdoor Pursuits lesson of the year.

Once again, they were concerned with the wet weather but fortunately the rain held off and they arranged games of Table Soccer, using the tennis courts as their venue.

It was a morning of competitive activity and Grade eight declared that it was the best OP lesson of the year, and that it should become an Inter-House competition.

Watching the weather continued as the G.A.P Students were scheduled to go sky-diving on a fine day.

They were rewarded when the sun shone and they were able enjoy a morning of exhilaration at the Durban Skydive Centre.

The group chose to do tandem jumps as the wind was threatening to pick up in the afternoon and Static Line jumps require considerable training.

In addition to all these varied activities, they also learnt to weld, when they spent a day at a local welding company. The result of their labours was two fire baskets for outside their braai area.

Their final commitment of the week was playing host to Prep’s Grade sevens who will attend College next year; and appropriately, the young guests enjoyed a braai.
