‘Man’s best friends’ killed
IT WAS apparently Mahatma Gandhi who said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” If he was correct, then we are nowhere near great and our moral progress has been retrogressive. Two adult dogs were stoned to death in Vryheid’s cemetery on Friday night or early on Saturday morning. The carcases were discovered on Saturday morning by cemetery staff who were preparing for the day’s funerals. There was no evidence of any ceremony attached to the stoning.
It appeared that the two animals had their heads smashed with two large stones taken from a nearby grave.
It appeared that the deeds took place in an open area where there were two large pools of blood, and that the carcases were then dragged to a nearby palm tree, leaving two trails of blood. Perhaps the dying dogs staggered to their final position because the trail of blood is not straight, and appears as if the blood was dripping to the ground rather than being smeared across it.
At the palm tree, care was taken to arrange the carcases, on their sides facing each other, one on either side of the tree, the front paws almost entwined.
One can read all manner of interpretations into this case, and each one might be wrong. Only the perpetrators will know why they brutally killed two dogs.
Perhaps even they don’t know.
