Cash in transit heist in Utrecht Street

IT IS that time of the year again when the criminals start to crawl out of the proverbial cracks to prepare for the festive season.
On November 3, shortly before 11:00, on an otherwise peacefully pleasant Sunday morning, shots rang out as a G4S Cash in Transit vehicle outside of Spar in Utrecht Street became the target of attack by a group of armed assailants.
Mr. Nkambule, a security guard for G4S, was in the process of doing a routine collection from Spar, when he came under fire from the occupants of a silver Toyota Run X with an ND registration.
Panic ensued, according to an eyewitness, as Spar patrons and staff alike ran for cover, some allegedly even hiding in the fridges. It is believed that 15 shots were fired by these brazen criminals, four of which hit Mr. Nkambule, one of which was in the face.
The robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to sources at the scene of the crime.
Mr. Nkambule was promptly taken to Vryheid Hospital, miraculously in a responsive state, despite the severity of his injuries, where he was treated.
He was later transferred to Newcastle Private Hospital, where his condition remains stable and his recovery seems promising.
