Landbou High School: An answer for the future?

MARTIN BURT, a former Mayor of Asuncion, the capital city of Paraguay, has made a significant impact in addressing unemployment and poverty through his Foundation Paraguaya. A Catholic priesthood approached him ten years ago offering him their church school, because they could see that his methods paid off and they wanted the children to have better education.
San Francisco Agricultural High School, situated on the outskirts of Cerrito, a small town outside the capital, was then established. Mrs Van Niekerk and her husband, Mr Paul Tait, from Weston, and the Saville Foundation attended the 7th Annual International Conference for self-sustainable schools.
There were delegates from Africa, India, South America, America and England. This model helps learners to learn by doing and earning. All possible activities which could be changed in small businesses were changed into businesses which are run by the learners themselves. Learners are actively involved in the production and marketing of their products. Profits help to pay the school fees and food and stay of the learners in the hostel. When learners leave this incredible school they receive a matric certificate, a diploma with all skill accredited by the State and a micro-loan from the Foundation Paraguaya.
Landbou knows that self-sustainability is the way to go! A big thank you to those who made this unforgettable trip possible!
