Two suspects were arrested after an attack on a clothing stall at the Plaza on Thursday. A Nigerian man who owns a secondhand clothing stall at the Plaza was approached by two men who enquired about the price of some of the clothing items.
He said he knew they were not interested in buying clothes, as he recognised them as being part of a criminal gang from Steadville that everyone is aware of. He says that when he told them to either buy something or leave, they got angry. One of them allegedly pulled out a knife and started waving it around.
When the other alleged gang members saw what was going on, they came running towards the stall and started throwing stones at the stall owner and his brother. The stall owner responded by grabbing an iron rod and chasing them towards the taxi rank. Bystanders called the police, and security guards from Macksons were alerted to the situation.
A short while later, the stone-throwers came back with bigger stones and again started pelting the stall owner and his brother, hitting them on the arms and chest.
A stone was thrown at the stall owner’s bakkie, breaking the passenger side window. Police arrived soon thereafter and two suspects were arrested.
