IT IS a well known fact that a lady’s handbag is under absolutely no circumstances to be meddled with.
On Friday, November 1, in broad daylight, between 1pm and 1:30pm, a would-be thief was reminded of this, as he rather audaciously attempted to pillage a young lady of her purse outside the entrance of the Vryheid Post Office in Church Street.
The shameless attacker held the young lady at knifepoint, while violently liberating her of her belongings, barely a stone’s throw away from the Police Station, it may be noted. Fortunately, the story does not end here.
After achieving his nefarious objective, the criminal set off with his loot, probably not expecting what happened next.
He had not gotten far, before being suddenly seized by approximately five to seven enraged onlookers who had witnessed his deplorable deed and perhaps felt a stern talking to would benefit this unsavoury character. Despite their best efforts, the perpetrator managed to escape, but not without first surrendering the stolen goods.
Please be alert and take note of your surroundings when out and about. Daylight is not even a deterrent for these opportunistic predators.
