13-day-old baby abducted

The baby is believed to have been 'taken' by an acquaintance of the mother.

Zanele Nkosi came into the New Year living every mother’s worst nightmare. The day before New Year’s eve, her 13-day-old baby boy, Siyamthanda, was abducted.

According to a police statement, Ms Nkosi struck up a conversation with Nothando Nxumalo, an acquaintance from Gauteng whom she encountered at the Newcastle rank, at about 11am on December 30. She trusted her baby in Ms Nxumalo’s care long enough to go to one of the shops at the rank to buy a packet of chips, but when she returned Ms Nxumalo had disappeared with the baby.

Ms Nxumalo (25) was wearing a khaki dress and curly hair extensions on the day, and Siyamthanda had been wrapped in a blue and white blanket that bore his name.

Police are urgently seeking the whereabouts of Ms Nxumalo, who is believed to have lived in the Kilbarchan area, and residents who have information as to her whereabouts are urged to contact Detective Warrant Officer Senzo Qwabe on 082 740 8649 or 034 314 6159 urgently, or call crime stop on 08600 10111.
