Business and politics joined forces to bring smiles to children from schools in and around Umtshezi.
Members of the African National Congress handed over seven full school uniforms to the learners on Tuesday.
Edith Lite said that the plight of the children came to their attention during their door-to-door visits.
“The children told us that they don’t have uniforms for school and we spoke to the Mayor Bongani Dlamini who secured a business sponsor and the uniforms were provided,” she said.
Mr Dlamini said that he hoped this initiative would give the young children motivation to take on the academic year with vigour.
He added that with the Education and Transport Departments backing the learner transport programme, this too should not hinder any child from attending school.
Zintonke Khumalo a grade 11 student from Bhekundi Secondary School was very grateful for the new uniform.
“I am now all prepared for the first day. Thank you to everyone who sponsored the uniforms to us,” she said.
