A new year always brings changes to any school. This year DHS has to say farewell to four beloved teachers: Mrs Davie, Mrs Mulhatton, Miss Heine and Mrs Jones.
Their dedication, compassion and brilliant teaching skills will be greatly missed in the classrooms of DHS, and the school wishes them much-deserved rest in their years of retirement.
DHS welcomes three new teachers to the school: Mr W Botha, who will be teaching Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy; Mrs A Bruyns, who will be extending her stay at DHS to teach Life Science and Natural Science; Mrs L Landman, who has joined the staff to teach English Home Language and Afrikaans First Additional Language; and Mrs D Odendaal, who has joined DHS to take over the media centre. The school wishes them a happy stay.
Top 10
Last Wednesday the academic top ten in each grade were awarded their badges for their results in the last term of 2013. Grade 8: Mercia Papazaharius, Dylan Maré, Krushil Sewmangal, Bongiwe Tshabalala, Le-Zayria Simon, Sourav Singh, Chanté Groenewald, Deanne Collins, Anele Mahlangu and Kamil Sooku.
Grade 9: Zhen Lee Wang, Muhammed Peer, Hafsa Khan, Siphumelele Gumede, Fezeka Langa, Zethembiso Zindela, Kevin Johnson, Sandiswa Mthombeni, Victor Ndawonde and Nomalungelo Mkhize.
Grade 10: Atiyyah Ameen, Sadiyah Malek, Jehan Ebrahim, Zithobe Gumede, Amanda Malinga, André Swiegers, Nabeela Khan, Anja Thom, Kerisha Ranjith and Shanté Marais.
Grade 11: Raeesah Sader, Gerald Bunge, Aadhil Moola, Siyabonga Lukhele, Anele Buthelezi, Devon du Plessis, Nqaba Mngomezulu, Sibonginkosi Mthembu, Qophelo Qwabe and Nibha Ramkelawan.
Bloodbank
On January 23, the Bloodbank was at DHS to encourage learners to make an effort to donate a unit of blood to help save lives.
One-hundred-and-fifty-four eager learners arrived to donate, but some were Grade 8s and 9s and therefore below the age of 16. They were turned away, but their enthusiasm is appreciated! In total, 117 units were donated, and a target of 200 units has been set for next time..
WESSA
Every year the Animal Demographic Unit (ADU) performs a national bird count of specific species, to see if they are increasing or decreasing in certain areas, and to determine the impact of human activity on breeding, feeding and nesting areas. Eight learners from the Dundee High School WESSA group took part in this count on Saturday, January 25. Four learners went with Mr Boggs into the Wasbank Valley, and four learners accompanied Mrs Heroux to survey the Tayside area.
Specific species had to be counted, thus providing learners with a great educational experience. The learners not only counted the required species, but learned more about the different habitats in which the birds are found, identifying bird species in general, as well as learning about the history of the area.
The learners were able to spot different spoor, and even saw a reindeer, large kudu bulls, eight giraffes, red hartebeest, steenbok and blesbok.
Mr Boggs’s group travelled through a history-rich area. During their bird count they saw zebras and visited an emu farm! They had great fun, and cannot talk enough about the things they have learned about birds, nature and history.
Chelmsford
It can be said without a doubt that DHS ROCKS! However, DHS learners do not swim like rocks! DHS is very proud of all the swimmers who participated in the annual Chelmsford Challenge. Dewald Wait and Jeanri Boshoff (old scholar) swam the 3km, and 14 learners, together with Mrs Carter and Mrs Venter, swam the 1km.
Twenty-five DHS learners, along with Mr A Deveraux, Mr K Müller and D Johnson (two of our governing body members), swam the 500m.
Thank you to all of these special people for their amazing DHS spirit and sheer guts, proving that DHS is a school to be reckoned with.

TD Agru sevens rugby
On Saturday, February 1 Dundee High School will be hosting their annual TD-Agri 7s Rugby Tournament. Dundee Hoër wil graag die hele Dundee en gemeenskap uitnooi om hierdie spesiale dag op die skool se kalendar saam met hulle te kom vier.
The school would like to sincerely thank Tertius Dowling and his team for once again making this tournament possible. Hierdie jaar sal TD-Agri weereens ‘n groot uitstalling hou by die toernooi, waar hulle sal spog met al hulle landbou toerusting, voertuie ens. See below for fixtures.
