Vryheid Landbou High School – Saai Boere win the day

A WEEKEND with good rain, but uncomfortably hot weather on the farm at Vryheid Landbou High School was still not enough to dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of 205 learners who were divided into the Saai and Vee Boere teams for the Annual Inter Athletics Derby. There was great tension as both teams were very close on the points table until the relay part of the day. The Saai Boere comfortably won most of the relay races and ended the day as the Kings of Spirit and Victors of the day after a three year losing streak against the Vee Boere. The Sasol trophy was handed to Mzizi Makhatini for his time of 12.1 seconds in the 100m for boys U/19. Learners were so motivated to score points for their teams that the Senior Victor Ludorum had to be shared by Sibisiso Ntombela, Jabu Nkosi and Mthuthuzeli Shabalala. The Senior Victrix Ludorum was awarded to Diana Mnomezulu. The next day most of the senior boys travelled to Dundee to participate in the Dundee TD Agri 7s rugby tournament. Schools from across the region participated and our 2nd team placed third out of six teams with great team play and a lot of spirit. The First team was up against strong competition from Newcastle and Dundee but just needed one point to make it to the Semi-Finals. This week the practicals will start again on the farm with new programmes such as the conservation project which will create eco-walking trails and eco areas. A start will be made with a project to assist NASA with the GLOBE project on global warming research. The waste management will keep on cleaning up our precious environment by implementing more recycling infrastructures and organic waste collection dumps to create its own fertilizer for the large vegetable garden. Regular activities such as assisting with chickens and working in the dairy are already in full swing. The farm also now boasts nine horses with two fillies. We also have 12 young steers (ossies) which are part of the animal handling practicals. Staff News: We are proud to announce that our Life Sciences teacher, Mr Geert Slump, has just achieved his Honours degree in Education from the University of Pretoria. Our warmest congratulations to him and his family on this tremendous achievement. This week a new Accounting teacher assumes duty at our school.
