Cyclist mowed down

After hitting the cyclist, the taxi driver lost control of his vehicle.

A cyclist was critically injured when he was run down by a taxi on Saturday afternoon.

Sources at the scene said the taxi driver was travelling down the yet-unfinished Asiphephe Drive extension, on the wrong side of the road, when he hit the cyclist travelling in the opposite direction.

The driver then lost control of his vehicle, which overturned.

“The cyclist had red code injuries (life-threatening).”

The cyclist, the taxi driver and a passenger in the vehicle at the time, were rushed to Madadeni Hospital for treatment, and their condition remains uncertain at present.Following the collision, Asiphephe Drive was choked with traffic.

While official vehicles were ultimately able to reach the scene, onlookers caused a severe gridlock both leaving and heading towards Madadeni.
