Municipal workers down tools
Angry workers said that they were tired of working hard and being under-paid.
ALL MUNICIPAL workers downed tools earlier this morning and stood in protest at the municipal buildings.
The municipal workers vocalised their anger and said that they were tired of being underpaid and singing chants such as “Sikhathele ukunikela ngamandla ethu” which in short means they are tired of working hard but being under-paid.
A list of grievances including complaints about “13th cheques” were brought forward by the workers who said that they had asked to speak to the acting municipal manager but he refused.
According to the workers, a certain percentage wage increase was agreed upon between municipal officials and their trade unions.
“Our wages were not increased even though we had been told that this would be done,” said the angry workers.
The Vryheid Herald contacted the municipality to get comment from the officials but it seemed that no calls were going through to the municipality. The Vryheid Herald was later informed that the workers had cut off the municipal building’s electricity supply and all phones, computers and lights were not working.
If anyone contacts the municipality today for whatever enquiries, they won’t be met by the usual “Welcome to AbaQulusi Municipality, your call is important to us,” and this will go on until further notice.
