Illegal dumping is creating a big problem at the corner of Illing and Thompson Road.
According to businessmen, scrap material that cannot be sold at the scrap yard is simply dumped on the corner, leaving the area in one hell of a mess. On windy days, rubbish evidently flies into nearby business premises, creating an unpleasant working environment.
A related problem is that motorists are allegedly disobeying road signs. People allegedly park all over the place, even on red lines where parking is forbidden, and it is alleged that some of them simply add to the dumping if the scrap yard won’t buy whatever they’re selling.
According to one businessman, “Mornings are ridiculous when it comes to gaining access to our own property. Vehicles queue up, blocking main entrances, parking on red lines and double parking.”
When a Ladysmith Gazette journalist asked the owner of the scrap yard for comment, he said that people dump scrap material that cannot be sold. The owners of the scrap yard are currently taking responsibility for the mess and remove the junk on a monthly basis. At times, however, the rubbish builds up to the extent that businessmen become incredibly frustrated. The scrap yard owners would like the municipality to assist by providing them with a huge dustbin to try and solve the illegal dumping problem.
