Islamic Educational Centre (IEC) pupil Zameer Mohamed Sardiwalla scooped the top award for the Road Safety Art Competition that was held recently.
The South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) invited the winners of the first-ever Road Safety Art Competition to Pretoria on Friday, February 21.
The competition was aimed at engaging the youth to express their thoughts on responsible road behaviour.
This, in turn, will assist in entrenching responsible road behaviour from a young age.
SANRAL CEO Nazir Alli said, “SANRAL supports the initiatives of the National Department of Transport with our road safety campaign called ‘ChekiCoast save a life’, which was launched in April last year.
“The campaign invited participants from universities and schools nationally.
“ChekiCoast aims to ensure correct road user behaviour for drivers and pedestrians.
“Our messages focus on: buckling up; don’t drink and drive / walk; don’t text and walk; be bright at night and keeping a safe following distance.”
The awards ceremony began with a welcome and introduction by community development & road safety officer Ms Elna Fourie. An address was then given by SANRAL CEO Mr Nazir Alli.
The much-anticipated awards were then handed over to the elated young artists.
Zameer Mohamed Sardiwalla was announced the winner of the Grade 1-3 category nationally. Zameer received a R5000 gift voucher from the CEO of SANRAL. The winners in each category received R5000 in vouchers and the overall winner received a whopping R25,000 cash prize! All winners received SANRAL goodie bags with road safety tips. Zameer’s artwork is featured for the month of April in the SANRAL 2014 calendar.
