Bridge Building Competition: On February 20, three teams from Sarel Cilliers High school took part in the annual Bridge Building Competition in Harrismith.
Three teams from Grades 10 to 12 participated. The members were all from the Mechanical Technology and Engineering Graphic and Design classes. There were in total 35 teams taking part on the day.
The learners were given 25 pieces of wood (5mmx5mmx600mm long) and epoxy glue. They had to build a bridge that would span a gap of 800mm in a time of seven hours. The bridges then got judged on aesthetic value, and also on the total mass of the bridge.
At 6:30pm the teams were randomly chosen to load their bridges with weights until they broke, to determine which bridge was the strongest. Out of the 35 teams, the Grade 10 team was awarded nineteenth position, the Grade 11 team was fourth (carrying a weight of 21,5kg) and the Grade 12 team came third (with a total weight of 24,5kg).
The first position was taken by Harriston High School in Harrismith, and second place by Ficksburg High School.
