Pupils and staff at Little Egerton had the privilege of meeting Mrs Clarice Edna Phillips, who was born on October 23, 1913, making her 100 years and four months old! She was born in Port Elizabeth and ended up living in Dundee, where she managed the Moth Hall until she was 81 years old.
Mrs Phillips was the Ladies’ Singles SA bowling champion and won many tournaments before joining Klipbank Bowling Club. She has nine grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren. Bryce and Kimber Scallan, currently in Grade 1 and Grade 00, are her great-grandchildren.
The children were in awe of such an incredible person who does not wear glasses, does not have a stick and still walks unaided! After visiting one of the classes, Mrs Phillips was heard to say: “My faith in the future has been restored by these children.” When asked what her secret to a long life is, she responded: “Avoid stress and drink lots of water.”
