The Vryheid Herald’s pride and joy

"Everything written in a newspaper is subjective and a column is the only part of the paper where you can express your opinions freely."

THE Vryheid Herald’s Editor, John Carnegie’s column En Passant, proved for the sixth year that he has not lost his touch.

The Vryheid Herald would like to congratulate John for bagging his sixth Best Regular Column award at the annual Caxton Excellence Awards which were held at the Johannesburg Civic Theatre on Thursday, March 13.

On having won this impressive amount of awards for his columns John says that he is very pleased since Caxton has over 100 newspapers in KZN alone and the Best Regular Column award is the most competitive category. He is glad to have won as this shows that the readers in Vryheid are receiving the very best.

“Everything written in a newspaper is subjective and a column is the only part of the paper where you can express your opinions freely,” says John who describes his writing a column as a “safety valve” for freedom of expression.

He has written 843 columns in total and his first ever column was about the arrival of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Vryheid back in April 25, 1997.

Congratulations also to sister newspaper’s René du Plessis, advertising sales representative for Newcastle Advertiser who received a highly commended award for her work on a motoring feature.

George Meyer for bringing home the Regional Manager of the year award. Terry Worley and Byron Pillay of Northern Natal Courier both scooped highly commended awards for their weekly columns. Sameera Motala from the Ladysmith Gazette bagged the Best Hard News Photograph Award.

Congratulations to all the Northern KwaZulu Natal branches, you all did us proud!
