On March 25 at about 14.15pm a Ladysmith business owner, dropped off an employee at a local bank in order to do the business banking. The 39 year old employee was trusted to bank over R250 000.
However, after a few minutes of waiting in the queue, the employee walked out of the bank without depositing any money.
A short while later when the business owner realised that the employee had not yet returned from the bank he made enquiries only to find out that no cash had been deposited at the bank. Police were alerted and a case of theft was opened.
Police then began to search for the suspect. Early on Thursday morning, March 27 , members of the Ladysmith Detective Service received information that the suspect may be hiding at his girlfriend’s house in Bergville.
On arrival at the house police discovered the suspect there and managed to find about half of the stolen cash. The money had allegedly been divided and hidden away in various places.
Police are still searching for the remainder of the stolen cash. The suspect is set to appear in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s court soon on charges of theft.
