Estcourt Visible Policing members arrested a 32-year-old man for attempted murder and attempted theft out of a motor vehicle along the N3 near Ultra City.
On March 18 at about 10.50pm, police were conducting their routine crime prevention operation when they spotted a group of unknown men attempting to break into the trucks parked at the Ultra City. Police instructed them to stop and leave the area but they shot at police.
Police retaliated, one suspect was shot and injured and the others fled. The injured suspect was taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard. Police recovered a knife, wheel spanners and truck-break-in equipment.
The arrested man will be charged for attempted murder and attempted theft out of a motor vehicle. He will appear in Estcourt Magistrates’ Court once he is discharged.
The arrest of the suspects who fled is imminent.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members for arresting the suspect.
“The hijacking and theft incidents of the trucks are a big concern in that area, we hope that the visibility of the police will decrease the criminal activities,” she said.
