Treverton athletes brought home six gold, four silver and three bronze medals from the KZN Youth Champs held in Durban in mid-March; the best results they have achieved in 28 years.
The gold medals were won by outstanding Grade nine athlete Bophelo Seoe, who romped home in first position in the long jump, 100 m and 200 m events. Brooke Cunha-Johnson won her gold for javelin and Niamh Delaney and Eugh Nyakabau for triple jump.
All four athletes have qualified for SA Champs, which will be held in Stellenbosch from April 3-5. Ayanda Tshuma who won two silver medals in the long jump, and triple jump events also qualified for SA Champs.
The other two silver medals were won by Marco Marais for discus and shot put.
Gold-medal winner Brooke Cunha-Johnson also received two bronze medals in the shot put and discus competitions and was joined by Alejandro Rodo in the bronze division who won his medal for discus.
Pictured with the team is Treverton’s veteran Athletics coach Rianne Botha, who though she has retired from classroom teaching continues to coach the school’s athletes. She has been appointed the Manageress of the KZN girls’ team, and will accompany the team to Stellenbosch in April.
