Bridge6 set to soar

A musical gene pool and a love for hard rock and metal brought about Bridge6, who rocked audiences at a local pub on Saturday night and will be competing at the Klipdrift Battle of the Bands on April 1.

“IF THE public wants live music, we’ll do our best to keep them happy.”

Those were the words of Michael Phytides, local businessman and owner of Ella Mera, who hosted Bridge6 on Saturday night, March 29.

Mr Phytides has recently displayed a keen willingness to promote live music in Vryheid, hosting several musicians from near and far, such as Leigh Hondy; Black Whiskey; Larry Amos; Ian and Kelvin Bland and Bridge6, in the past few months.

The variety of music has also been wide and versatile, catering for many tastes and accommodating as many fans as possible.

Bridge6, who played on Saturday night, is an alternative/metal/hard rock band from Vryheid, comprised of George Fritze on vocals and guitar; Estiaan Fritze on drums; Xanell Fritze on bass guitar and Jaco Engelbrecht on lead guitar and vocals.

It is quite safe to say that the band was very well received by the diverse crowd who attended the event.

Aside from their own material, Bridge6 did a few covers of some more well known artists, with a brilliant version of Dale Hawkins’ ‘SusieQ’ which was most famously covered by Creedence Clearwater Revival and a version of ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ that would have made both Thin Lizzy and Metallica proud.

The highlight for many of the patrons was Bridge6’s brilliant cover of ‘Sugarman,’ a song originally by Sixto Rodriguez and possibly his best known song.

Many patron’s requested the song after hearing George sing it at the Larry Amos event a few weeks before and being captivated by his hauntingly dark rendition of the massive 1970’s hit song.

Bridge6 is set to go far, competing in Klipdrift Battle of the Bands in Boksburg, Gauteng on Tuesday, April 1.
