A security guard who raped a mentally challenged woman in an old-age home has been jailed for 18 years.
The Dundee Regional Court heard how Khawulani Patrick Magubane (29) knocked on the door of a bedroom on the night of August 25, 2012.
The knocking woke up the 29-year-old lady, and the guard asked if she was ‘still safe’. The woman opened the door, whereupon the guard grabbed her arm and pulled outside the building to a field, where he raped her.
Traumatised, she went back to her room.
In the days following, Magubane boasted to his friends that he had had sexual intercourse with the victim.
A matron at the home heard of Magubane’s boasting and she contacted the Helpmekaar SAPS, who handed the case over to the Dundee Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, welcomed the sentence. “This will serve as a deterrent to others who think they can take advantage of vulnerable women and children and get away with it,” she said.
